| Uses Excessive Fuel If you feel that your engine is using too much fuel, my first recommendation would be to perform a proper tune up. Weak ignition, dirty air filters, and worn or fouled spark plugs can cause the engine to use too much fuel. A secondary cause could be a misadjusted or malfunctioning carb. Special attention should be paid to the choke system if equipped. The two most common tell-tale signs of an engine that is using too much fuel are fuel fouled spark plugs (loose black soot) and black smoke coming from the exhaust. Either of these conditions indicate the need for service to the fuel system and or the ignition system. Leaks Fuel Fuel leaks come in two varieties: external and internal. External leaks are generally caused by damaged components, components that have become loose, damaged or missing gaskets, flaws or defects in metal castings, and the porosity of materials used in castings. Inspect each component in the fuel system for signs of the above. Make sure all the fasteners are properly tightened, and be sure to use clamps at all fuel hose joints. Inspect rubber hoses carefully and replace them if any signs of damage or deterioration are present. Finally, don't overlook the possibility of rust holes in metal fuel tanks, etc. If everything checks out OK, take the carb in to a professional to be checked for casting flaws and porosity problems.
