Uses Excessive Oil Or Leaks Oil

Before we start a discussion about the causes of excessive oil consumption, let's first decide what should be considered excessive. For most small engines, it is considered normal to use around 1 ounce of oil per hour. Even then, there will be a slight variation (more or less) from one engine to another!

Before you decide that there is a real problem, try the following steps:

1. Wash the engine and equipment so that it is free from dirt and oil.
2. Fill the engine with oil to the recommended level.
3. Start and run the engine, using the equipment as you normally do.
4. After 1 hour of usage, stop the engine and carefully check the oil.

5. If the oil level is low, measure the amount that is required to refill.

Did the engine use less than 1 ounce of oil?

If the engine did use more than 1 ounce of oil in an hour or if you can see bluish gray or white smoke, the engine will require additional troubleshooting.

Otherwise, your oil consumption problem is probably due to leakage.
