After Fire (The loud * POP * after killing your engine)

This problem occurs most often on vertical shaft engines that are turning a blade or belt and blade combination. The reason for the *POP* is because the rotational force of the engine continues to pump raw unburned fuel after the ignition is killed. This fuel is pumped into a red hot exhaust system where it ignites and then explodes in the muffler or exhaust pipe.

The most common reason for this problem stems from killing the engine while it's running at partial to full throttle and can often be corrected by simply allowing the engine to return to complete idle before turning off the ignition. You might also check to make sure the idle setting on your engine is correct.

Another way to cure the problem if it persists is to install a special anti-after fire muffler and/or a fuel solenoid. (Check with the local parts supplier for availability for your engine.)
