Loud Squealing Noise

There is no mistaking this sound! The problem is primarily found on recoil starter type engines that use a starter clutch. While it is sometimes possible to repair by cleaning and lubricating the starter clutch, the only long term cure is to replace it!

The only other situation that would cause this type of noise would be some sort of trash, rocks or other debris being trapped inside the starter shroud, rubbing against a rotating component. However, if the engine is equipped with a starter clutch, I can almost guarantee that the starter clutch is the cause!
